Refrigerator maintenance

Refrigerator maintenance has two goals: keep food at a safe temperature and keep airflow, seals, and heat-rejection areas working as the model was designed.

Verify food-safe temperatures

  • Use an appliance thermometer instead of relying only on the control dial. U.S. food-safety guidance recommends keeping the refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below and the freezer at 0°F (-18°C).
  • Avoid overpacking vents and shelves so cold air can circulate. If temperatures are above the safe range, treat it as a cooling problem rather than routine maintenance.

Keep doors, seals, and interior clean

  • Wipe spills promptly and keep food covered to reduce contamination and odors.
  • Clean door-contact surfaces and visible gaskets gently. Do not pull, stretch, or remove a gasket unless the model instructions call for it.
  • Use non-abrasive cleaners that are approved for the interior and finish; avoid spraying liquid directly into controls, vents, or seams.

Follow the model’s condenser guidance

  • Some refrigerators require periodic cleaning around accessible condenser coils or grilles; others are designed differently. Use the exact manual before removing a grille or moving the refrigerator.
  • When manufacturer instructions permit condenser cleaning, disconnect power first and avoid bending tubing, fins, water lines, or wiring.

Maintain water and ice systems by the manual

  • Replace water filters only with the correct type and at the model’s indicated interval or status. Flush and reset the system as the manufacturer directs.
  • Ice-maker cleaning, water-line service, and internal valve work are model-specific. A leak or electrical concern is a troubleshooting issue, not routine cleaning.
